A boutique by design

Stacktrace is deliberately small. Engagements are led by a principal engineer with more than twenty years of hands-on experience in enterprise Java, distributed systems, security-sensitive and financial software, and they are delivered personally. As the practice grows, it works with a carefully selected network of senior engineers who share the same standards. We will never present a larger organisation than the one that does the work.

This model has a clear consequence for clients: the person who understands your problem is the person who solves it. There is no sales layer, no hand-off to a junior team after the contract is signed, and no overhead that exists only to manage itself.

Experience built before AI

Every engineer who works on your systems has at least ten years of full-time software engineering behind them from before AI coding assistants became common in 2022–2023, and in some cases twenty. That matters more now, not less. AI tools produce plausible code quickly; knowing whether it is correct, secure and maintainable inside a system that has run for fifteen years takes experience built the slow way: production incidents debugged at night, platforms upgraded under load, design decisions lived with for years.

We use AI wherever it makes us faster, and we build AI features for our clients. The judgement stays human, and senior.

Why "Stacktrace"

A stack trace is what a system leaves behind when something goes wrong: the exact path, frame by frame, from the failure back to where it started. Reading one well is a skill learned slowly, over years of production incidents, and it is the starting point of most of the work we are called for.

Our engineers learned it long before AI coding tools, by debugging real systems. The name is a promise about how we work: we follow the evidence down to the line where the problem is, and we fix it there.

How we engage

Every engagement starts with understanding: the system, the constraints, the people. We then propose a concrete approach with its trade-offs and an estimate of effort, deliver in increments you can verify, and transfer the knowledge so that your team owns the result. Engagements range from a fixed-scope assessment of a few weeks to long-term development and technical leadership. See how we work for the details.

Where we work

We are based in Lugano and work with clients across Ticino, from Mendrisio and Chiasso to Bellinzona and the valleys. The work happens remotely and at our office; we visit clients for the kick-off, workshops, important decisions and handover. With clients in German- and French-speaking Switzerland we meet in person when it adds value. Clients in Italy, the rest of Europe, the UK and the USA are served remotely.

What we will not do

  • Present junior staff as senior, or replace the people you met after the contract is signed.
  • Invent urgency, scarcity or results to win a project.
  • Recommend a rewrite without evidence that incremental change will not work.
  • Claim certifications, partnerships or client references we do not have.
  • Hide trade-offs, risks or bad news. You hear them as early as we know them.
